NHBC ABRIDGED STATEMENT OF FAITH
The Holy Scriptures.
We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the verbally inspired Word of God. The Scriptures are inerrant, infallible and God-breathed and, therefore, are the final authority for faith and life. The sixty-six books of the Bible are the complete and divine revelation of God to Mankind. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
Dispensationalism.
We believe that the Scriptures interpreted in their natural, literal sense reveal divinely determined dispensations or rules of life which define man’s responsibilities in successive ages. These dispensations are not ways of salvation, but rather divinely ordered stewardships by which God directs man according to His purpose. Three (3) of these dispensations—the law, the church, and the kingdom—are the subjects of detailed revelation in Scripture. (Gen. 1:28; 1 Cor. 9:17; 2 Cor. 3:9-18; Gal. 3:13-25; Eph. 1:10; 3:2-10; Col. 1:24-25, 27; Rev. 20:2-6)
The Godhead.
We believe in one triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfections; equal in every Divine perfection and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation and redemption. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; John 14:10, 26; 2 Cor. 13:14).
The Person and Work of Christ.
A. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful mankind. (Isa. 7:14; 9:6; Luke 1:35; John 1:1-2, 14; 2 Cor. 5:19-21; Gal. 4:4-5; Phil. 2:5-8)
B. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death and shedding of His blood on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice; and, that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. (Rom. 3:24-25; Eph. 1:7; 1 Pet. 2:24; 1 Peter 1:3-5)
C. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of the Father where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate. (Acts 1:9-10; Rom. 8:34; Heb. 9:24; 7:25; 1 John 2:1-2); and that He’s coming again to establish His Kingdom.
The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.
We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and baptizes all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. (John 16:8-11; Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 12:12-14; 2 Cor. 3:6; Eph. 1:13-14)
The Total Depravity of Man.
We believe total depravity does not mean fallen human beings are as sinful as they could be, but that apart from Christ we are not as good as we should be (in accordance with God’s perfect nature or the perfection with which He created us). Humans are born wholly, not partially, depraved; that is, every aspect of their being is affected by sin, while at the same time no aspect is completely destroyed by it. Thus, while total depravity is a complete inability to achieve/obtain the solution to our sin problem by ourselves, it is not a total inability to accept our needed solution/salvation from God. (Matthew 23:37; II Peter 3:9; I Timothy 2:3,4; II Thess. 2:13)
Salvation.
A. We believe that salvation is a gift from God and that in order to be saved, sinners must be born again; that the new birth is a new creation in Christ Jesus. (Luke 5:27; John 1:12-13; 3:3, 6-7; Acts 2:41; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:17, 19; Gal. 5:22; Eph. 2:1, 8-10; 5:9; Col. 2:13; 1 Peter 1:18,19; 1 John 5:1)
B. We believe in God’s electing grace and that salvation ia made free to all by the gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by a cordial, penitent and obedient faith; and nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the gospel. (Matt. 11:28; John 3:15-18; Rom. 8:29-30; 10:13; Eph. 2:4-5; Col. 3:12; 1 Thess. 1:4; 1 Tim. 1:15; Titus 1:1; Rev. 22:17)
The Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers. We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power are thus secure in Christ forever. (John 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Rom. 8:1; 38-39; 1Cor. 1:4-8; 1 Pet. 1:4-5)
The Eternal State. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all mankind, the saved to eternal life, and the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment (Matt. 25:46; John 5:28, 29; 11:25-26; Rev. 20:5-6, 12-13).
