Something to Think About

Psalm 23

David’s Psalm is sublime—far surpassing even the imagery of the world’s finest poets. We cannot escape the sense of his delight to be under the care of this Shepherd. We immediately feel the extraordinary relationship that exists between the Shepherd and the sheep.  Their relationship stirs within us one of two, very real, reactions: longing or recognition.

Christians should recognize, from their own relationship with the Lord, David’s complete trust and reliance upon the Shepherd. This Psalm is an affirmation of our own relationship with Christ, who emphatically claimed, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”(John 10:11). As such, David’s resolve to trust the Lord was absolute. So much so he confidently declares, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.” His reason? Because the Good Shepherd was with him!

Others find a longing in their hearts when reading this Psalm. Their deepest desire is to possess this same confidence and trust as David. Their hearts long for the “still waters” in a world filled with turmoil. They seek “green pastures” that cannot be purchased. Perhaps your heart is longing for the same peace and contentment David describes for himself. It begins with accepting the Lord as your Shepherd. Is Christ your Shepherd? If so, then walk in His shadow and be blessed. If not, there is no time like the present to call upon Him who has no limits of mercy and grace (Romans 10:13). Or perhaps as a believer you’ve wandered from the fold; eyes embracing the sweet desires that lay outside the Shepherd’s “green pastures.” Like the lamb that’s gone astray you suddenly find yourself surrounded by the wolves of misfortune and disillusionment. Get back under the shadow of the Savior. It’s the one place of peace and rest for the sheep.
